Kwanzaa's Seven Principles

I will continue to display the principles, because it's a good idea to keep them present. Do you agree?
I had the pleasure of meeting the founder of Kwanzaa,
Dr. Maulana Karenga, when I was a student at Shaw
University, in Raleigh North Carolina.
From December 26th. through January 1st we observe and celebrate the traditions of Kwanzaa. It is not a holiday although we give a greater credence to Kwanzaa at that time of the year. The Nguzo Saba (N goo-zoh) The Seven Principles are a lifestyle. Just imagine how much greater this world will be, as we continue to instill these principles into our lifestyle and become them.

1.umoja (unity) (oo-mo-ja)>
To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race. You are a unit in the community.

2.Kujichagulia (coo-gee-cha'-goo-lee-ah) (Self-Determination)
To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves
This is why many of us change our names and have changed the sound of our children's names, wear Afrikan attire and have taken to reading and writing our own account of our plight) There is nothing more powerful than a made up mind. Initiate and be great in, 2008.

3. Ujima oo-jee-mah (Collective Work and Responsibility)
To build and maintain our community together and make our brother's and sister's problems our problems and to solve them together.
If your neighbor is not able to roll their trash bin to the curb, won't that eventually effect you? Roll it for them.

4. Ujamaa oo-jam-mah (Cooperative Economics)To
build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together.
On the average, the dollars in the African community leave one Black business, are received by another Black business and then those dollars leave the community. There was a time when we traded almost exclusively with Black businesses. Never mind the motivation. The practice worked for us. Our dollars did flips, bounced, rolled turned cartwheels and remained in the community. (That system "won't" broke; we didn't need to fix it- we need to resurrect it.) Thus the principle, Ujamaa. Our business are a part of the economic food chain. Let's alter our economic diet. It's not too late to initiate.

5. Nia knee-ah (Purpose)
To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness. What is your vision for greatness?

6. (Creativity) Koo-oom-bah
To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

7. Imani (Faith)
To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
Initiate and be great in this year 2008. Happy New Year to You!

UMOJA

More than any other time in my aware life, We must implore these princibles to become active in our interactions. I think we have a good year and a half before this economic crisis changes course. We know how to do this and for those so inclined...
let's get it on.

Twelve Twenty-Five

THINKING OF YOU

Season's Greetings to each of you
thought filled with Raleigh, rain
Twelve twenty-five forever taken on the chin
was my number at the ballot box,
to usher Obama's win.

Merry Christmas Baby!

Letter to the Obama's

JOY WORKS INK
_____________________________

October 25, 2008

Dear President Elect Obama & Chief Mom First Lady,

I have been working as a volunteer for the Barack Obama, Campaign for Change since October 2007. It seems like eons ago. My first introduction to then, Senator Obama was during the Clinton’s Democratic Convention. Eight years later I heard that he was going to be a guest on Fariah Chideya, NPR, News and Notes to discuss his intention for candidacy. After hearing him, I made my decision right then and there, to be involved however I could be utilized. I have lived in Wake County, Raleigh, NC for over 40 years. While working with the campaign, I phone banked, canvassed, donated money and acted as the staging director for interior of the Southeast Raleigh community from November,
1-4. 2008. It was glorious, rain and all.
In April 2008, I was inspired and compelled to commit these few lines to paper. My motivation arose from the historic event that was unfolding before my eyes and Barack Obama's ability to overcome all odds and obstacles that were put in his way. In doing so, he showed all of us that the ideology of "Yes we can" is within each and every one of us provided we are willing to invest the maximum effort required to achieve our individual goals. I envisioned myself reading this poem at President-Elect Obama’s Inauguration. This poem has been on display in our Obama campaign headquarters location at 130 E. Morgan Street, in downtown Raleigh, since July 2008. Many who have seen it have commented favorably on its’ message of hope and enlightenment.
I recently had the distinct honor of sharing a few words with then Senator Obama and delivering this literary work on two occasions, to one of his assistant’s as he campaigned through North Carolina. Once on the night of the primaries… when we delivered and again at his visit to the State the week before the elections. We all know what happened in North Carolina, that week. Carolina Blue!
How fitting that the poem read at his Inauguration be also authored by a resident of North Carolina a “swing” or shall we say “the swing” State. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Respectfully,

Ajuba H. Joy

Imagine

I believe in the power of a single thought
Thoughts are things.
You know what I mean?
They gather the energy of the Universe
and manifest them into existence.
Had any good thoughts lately?
Change this world!

I believe in the power of the written word
I believe it can thrust us to transcend time, space
and all limitations real or imagined.

When that word is spoken,
it becomes the Force behind a waterfall
and will not be denied

Hear It...heed It.
Write it... read it.
Think it, create it, be It!

It is sometimes so difficult to allow someone, to just... be! Obama has been compared to many greats. Let us allow him to make his own way. He is a unique individual with his own style and attributes. When we hold someone to the standard of another, I believe it is has the potential for setting someone up to disappoint us. We are thirsty for a healing in this country and Obama represents that cool, clean, glass of water. He has the ability to speak to a very deep place of truth within each of us, we recognize the language and we respond.

Obama is all the wonderful adjectives we can muster but remember... he is just a man and he is only as strong as the weakest link; Like those who are at threat of losing their homes, those who are presently homeless, those who are sick and unable to afford health insurance, those who make 6.15 per hour, those who are educated and can't find work, those who are strained in the sandwich generation, those who have been unfairly judged, those who are children. We are all in the same boat. We are the human food chain.

There is an African proverb that says: "When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion." There is allot of work to do. We have an election to win. Let's stay focused and consistent."Yes WE Can!" For the naysayers I ask, When was a time all you had... was hope ?

To My Best Recollection!

I remember the first time we kissed.
A mutual agreement.
You gently scooped me into your arms...

It was just like eating, a chocolate- truffle.
Our lips moving forward to meet,
in warm, soft, sweetness.
Tongues danced...
as time stood with us.

Our lips parted...
eyes opened and we exhaled!
We were whole... and in the Sacred.

Full Term

You are from me...
small wonder of new arrival
You live, for love.

I watch you dream in sweet sleep.
Your breath interluding with
your Higher Power's.

Small wonder miracle...
teach me love and patience.

Locked Free

You see those things in her hair?
She calls them Locks...
Couldn't help but to stare.

She said her hair is locked
and now she's free
Don't make a darn bit of sense to me!

Well you know she was always kind of deep.
Please turn off that light!
Let's go to sleep.

Absorption of Colors

Sweet Blackness of ebonized licorice
diamonds in the rough
and all colors of Creation...
absorb me!

Black
holes of infinite depth...
let me journey within your wisdom.
Black markets of abundance
I invest in your richness,
utilizing the righteous natural laws.

Beautiful Black souls,
yielding to smiles of colorful children,
voices of truth...
the justice of gender

Sacred beauty of Blackness,
I seek you in myself!
I seek myself in you!
